This year, Maribor holds the prestigious title of the European Capital of Culture. We would like to highlight this year as the year of humanity and mutual help. We are putting all our efforts into improving the lives of all our citizens and to raise awareness of human values, peace and solidarity. In 1999 Maribor joined the organisation Mayor’s for Peace to emphasis our efforts on maintaining environments enabling citizens to lead a safe, cultural life and to contribute to the attainment of lasting world peace. We would like to establish intercultural and interreligious dialogues and to provide care and support for all, who are in need. Therefore I support several humanitarian projects and events.
In 2007 we have launched a donations initiative and since then we have helped more than 2600 families and individuals. Last year we have invited primary schools to join the international project Pinwheels for Peace. On the international day for peace 450 pinwheels were whirling, reminding us of the importance of peace in our everyday lives.
In 2010, during the last visit of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, we have set ourselves the ambitious goal of organizing a Nobel Peace Prize Laureates meeting to raise awareness of human values among our citizens and to inspire them. The visit of such important and respected guests is a positive experience in times of crisis of values and trust. However, it also represents an added value to the events of the European Capital of Culture.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureates will meet on May 17th, 2012 at 10:00 o’clock in the Grand Hall of the Slovene National Theatre in Maribor, where they will share their views and thoughts on the importance of dialogue and solidarity in times of a global crisis.
Help us promote peace, tolerance and humanity – join us from May 15th – 17th, 2012 in Maribor!
